Accessing Government support for freelancers in Covid-19 crisis

Tony Lennon, Bectu freelance and research officer, explains financial support available to freelancers in the Covid-19 crisis and how to access it. He was speaking on Friday 3 April 2020 at an online Q&A organised by the Indie Training Fund (ITF), part of ScreenSkills.

The support available depends on whether you work:

  • on freelance PAYE contracts
  • as a self-employed sole trader
  • through a limited company

Tony explains the schemes put in place by the Government including:

  • Universal Credit
  • Self-employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS)
  • Tax forbearance
  • The deferring of IR35
  • Job Retention Scheme and furloughing
  • Business Interruption Loan Scheme

Questions from those attending

"Do you need to give Universal Credit back to the government?"

"Can I be furloughed if my current freelance PAYE contract has just ended and my next contract was not due to start next week?"

"I operate through a limited company. How would it affect my claim for Self-employment Income Support (SEIS) if I was offered freelance work?"
