I’m Sam Griffiths, a 3D animator based in South Wales and the South West and have recently just completed my first animated short which I directed and had the help from a great small team. Before that I worked on freelance projects as a storyboard artist and designer while also developing my own 3D work, since graduating from the Animation course at the Arts University Bournemouth in 2019.

Have you benefited from any ScreenSkills support so far?

In spring 2020 I was awarded a ScreenSkills bursary to support in equipment and software costs. This enabled me to take on freelance projects which then led to self funding the development of an animated short I created, The Griffgons: In The Bakehouse, which is currently being released to film festivals. ScreenSkills' financial support through the offer of the bursary as well as the online training and events they provide have been really encouraging throughout the beginning of my career.

What effect has this support had on your career so far?

The support of the bursary has opened up a lot of opportunities for me and also enabled for to refine my ability in 3D Animation.

What is the achievement you are most proud of in your career so far?

Finishing the work on the animated short was a big achievement for me, especially as I thought that I’d have to abandon it a few times.

If you could give advice to someone interested in pursuing your job role or a career in the screen industries more generally, what would you say?

I think it’s really important to have inspirations, influences and films we enjoy, but I would advise to avoid comparing your pathway to others. I think careers are different for all individuals, some take a bit more time to establish but finding what works best for you is the most important.
