About
Thoughtful, detail-oriented visionary with more than 25 years in the Beauty, Hair and Makeup Industries and 12 years’ experience working in TV and film as an artist, then moving on to supervisory and design roles. She previously worked as a designer in the fashion industry along with multiple jobs within TV entertainment and red carpet events. Melanie has also worked in education before and during TV roles, teaching her skills at mainstream universities and managing her own award winning hair and make-up academy, helping transport students through the historical eras, cultures and imaginary worlds to showcase how to bring stories to life and shape the audience’s perception though the craft of hair and make-up artistry.
Melanie has always kept informed by continually updating her skills with some of the best prosthetics artists, afro and textured hair tutors within the industry, excelling in both areas. Melanie is skilled in hairdressing, barber, all aspects of make-up including designing and creating prosthetics, along with skills in collaboration with other departments and building creative teams that work and bond well together.
Melanie recently worked for 10 months on a Disney TV production with US network company Colour FX as a hair and make-up supervisor. She looked after more than 250 main cast, taking on many roles in designing some of the looks for the special effects make-up, attending production meetings and being required to step up to assist the designer due to the size of the project. Melanie is at a point in her career where the next step is taking on the role as a HOD in high-end TV drama.
Melanie is currently a HETV Leader of Tomorrow. Participants in the three-year inclusion programme for mid-level professionals are nominated by senior colleagues in high-end TV. Her nominator Marcia Blackwood said: “Melanie has a real passion for her work and is committed to continuously developing her skills. She genuinely cares about whoever is in her chair and has the ability to make people feel comfortable. Her strong leadership skills were developed from running her own hair and make-up school where she was committed to passing on her knowledge to others. I feel that the Leaders of Tomorrow programme will continue to help her develop her existing skills to move onto the next phase in her career.”

Supervisor
Supervisor role for the main team along with assisting the designer with the design of characters, working mainly on the special effects casualty makeup which is one of my fortes for the cast throughout the show. Karen Hartley Thomas whom is the designer has given me the roles to complete all break downs for each episode, keep up to date of the finances and budget, ordering kit and stock required for each of the episodes and keeping in order ‘Sync on Set’ for over 250 main cast. It was my job to create and design special effects makeup injuries for a number of characters throughout the 9 episodes and mentor and support the team with their daily needs and requirements. During the show I was ‘Key Spedcial Effects Makeup Artist’ for Josh Finnan, Key Hair and Makeup Artis for Ryan McParland, Judith Ruddy, Helen Behan, Frankie McCafferty, Frank Blake, Art Parkinson, Nigel O’Neill, Jack Myers, Colin Connor, Eileen Walsh, Cuban Hosty-Blaney, Frankie Bourke, Tom Roe along with many of our day player main cast and all special effects for scenes where casualty special effects makeup was required.

Hair and Makeup Supervisor
Ralph and Katie, winner of two Royal Television Awards in 2023. My Supervisory role to main team, was supporting and disseminating jobs to all team members, working closely with Designer Marcia Blackwood to develop charaters and chose hair colours and cut hair to aid in continuity of characters. Develop breakdowns for each character and keep on top of the receipts and finace side. My other role was Key Hair and Makeup Artist to our number 1 actress Sarah Gordy MBE, who played Katie, Sarah who is Down Syndrome was a pleasure to work with and learn with what worked for her best as an actress and where best I could support her during the filming of the show.

Key Hair and Makeup Artist
AKOS winner of a ~Royak Television Award in 2023. I was Key Hair and Makeup Artist employed to work with the number 1 actress, to ensure that all needs was met. I was hired, because of my specilaist teaching back ground with Nuerodivergent learners. The story of the production was based on young people growing up with ADHD and so the production wanted to employ actors who was also neurodivergent within real life, a great connection for young people watching at home, the hair and makeup for ‘Addie’, whom I had to design her hair and makeup to suit her ensory nature, was a joy to work with everyday. AKOS was a great project to be involved with and a second series is immenint.
