Unconscious bias refers to the biases we hold that are not in our conscious control. Research shows that these biases can adversely affect key decisions in the workplace, and in a climate where the UK TV industry is rightly being challenged to up its game in terms of diversity and inclusion, understanding and addressing their wider impact is critical. From recruitment, to commissioning, to casting to general behaviour in the workplace - the baggage we bring to the table certainly has an effect on the progress of the industry changing for the better.

This session is open to all, and is a practical follow-up to our recent panel on TV and diversity (watch again here).

What it covers

The aim of the session is to provide participants with an understanding of the nature of Unconscious Bias and how it impacts on individual and group attitudes, behaviours and decision-making processes.

By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:

  • explain the source and function of unconscious bias
  • develop strategies and techniques for reducing personal unconscious bias, as well as the unconscious bias that manifests in teams and across the organisation.
  • recognise how unconscious bias impacts on decision-making and relationships in the organisation.
  • develop a strategy for individual action.

The workshop will last 90 minutes to the following programme:

  • defining unconscious bias
  • why we developed unconscious biases
  • our modern-day mammoths
  • addressing unconscious bias
  • managing unconscious bias
  • individual action

Time will be allowed for questions.
