This workshop with Tim Patterson focuses on the world of children’s television. If you want to get your show idea commissioned,  these sessions will help you better understand the process, the broadcast environment and the dos and don'ts of pitching.

This is a two-part workshop taking place over two days:

  • Tuesday 18th August 3pm - 4pm: Getting your programme idea commissioned
  • Wednesday 19th August 3pm - 4pm: Understanding the value of a Kids TV show - the IP value chain

 

What it covers

Over the course of the two sessions, the following areas will be covered:

  • understanding the challenges and opportunities
  • preparing the ground and thus increasing the odds of your success
  • what’s the story – what have you go to sell and to who?
  • getting inside the commissioners head – who are you pitching to, the person and the brand
  • what goes into a pitch
  • different types of pitches
  • understanding you – what makes you tick
  • confidence and why it’s important – both for you and the commissioners
  • where you can pitch / different scenarios (elevator, 5, 15 mins)
  • understanding kids IP value – for the creator and broadcaster / platform

Speaker

Tim Patterson has extensive experience in the TV content and business world and has held a number of senior positions in commercial and public companies, including Nickelodeon/Viacom, BBC, UKTV, ITV and Disney.

Tim presently runs his media consultancy T1M Consult and advises creators, producers, broadcasters and other industry sectors on content, brand, business and broadcast strategy and content development, production and business & programme pitching.

Before T1M Consult Tim was CEO of Larkshead Media, an end-to-end media service company. Primarily focused on kids programming IP, giving TV programme ideas the best start in life and planning for their future, with specific focus on programme development, co-production, investment, programme brand planning and strategy and sales .

Before Larkshead, Tim was Vice President, Director of Programming at Nickelodeon UK, a network of 4 channel brands, and was responsible for programme commission, acquisition and development, content strategy, planning and scheduling, media planning, multi-platform content and broadcast operations for Nickelodeon’s portfolio of 7 channels, including its on-demand and multi-platform offering. And, before joining Nickelodeon he was Head of Editorial Operations, Planning and Services at UKTV, a network of 10 channels covering entertainment, factual and lifestyle genres.

This event is supported by the ScreenSkills Children’s TV Skills Fund which invests in training for those working in children’s live-action TV thanks to contributions from the industry.

It is part of a ScreenSkills programme to support freelancers to upskill and stay connected, helping keep the industry resilient in these difficult times.
