A practical session covering the essentials of sourcing and clearing the rights in TV and Film Archive. Using practical examples and clips to demonstrate points, with interactive sections (like archive programme paperwork) for students to consider issues they will be faced with. Designed to give attendees an introduction to how archive audio-visual material may be sourced, researched and cleared for the various rights within it.

Producers/Assistant Producers, Production Managers and Co-Ordinators, Programme Assistant staff and anyone needing to know more about rights and permissions to Television and Film Archive material, and/or who has to negotiate rights for this material on a regular basis.

  • Archive Sources – where to find it (Free & Commercial), and the risks around ‘lifting’ from social media
  • Permissions, Rights & Forward Licensing (and the layers to consider)
  • What will it cost? (And ways to make it cheaper…)
  • Paperwork – Why this is critical…
  • Top Tips on what to avoid / watch out for (e.g. Compliance, duty of care to contributors)
  • Creative Re-Use of archive and Moral Rights issues
  • Examples of ‘gold-standard’, award-winning archive use
