My name is Leila Suharwardy and I’m currently based in Manchester. I am a recent graduate from Manchester Metropolitan University after completing a BSC in Psychology. I am now looking to move into the TV and film industry as a floor runner with a production team. I am looking for new and exciting opportunities working within the industry and while I haven't had a lot of experience in the industry I have many transferable skills from both my academic and work experience which will help me move into this industry.

Have you benefited from any ScreenSkills support so far?

I have participated in many different events and training courses provided by ScreenSkills. This includes the coronavirus basic awareness on production training, best practices for training in the screen industries online course and the post-super: post production training for production coordinators and secretaries. As an individual new to the industry, I am aiming to learn as much information as I can about the industry and ScreenSkills has been essential in that. I've also applied for the ScreenSkills Trainee Finder programme in the assistant director/floor runner role.

What effect has this support had on your career so far?

ScreenSkills have provided me with the stepping stone to enter into the industry. As a recent undergraduate it has given me insight into the career I want and the tools I need to achieve it. It has provided me with opportunities to apply for training programmes and to participate in support sessions. This helps with my understanding of the industry and improves my networking abilities. It also has given me goals to work towards to continue improving in this industry.

What have you found most interesting about the industry so far and how has it helped your own career?

The most interesting thing about this industry is how many different opportunities there are if you wish to get involved in high-end TV and film. Through ScreenSkills I've discovered just how many jobs were available in the industry and what ones I could work towards. My biggest achievement to date has been the decision to develop my own piece to build my portfolio, it's something very close to my heart.

If you could give advice to someone interested in pursuing a career in the screen industries, what would you say?

As I am new to the industry, I would say apply for everything you can, to get as much experience as you can. This industry does not appear to rely solely on academic education, rather it relies on experience you have gained. With that in mind, be willing to participate in anything and always seek to gain new and exciting experience. with more experiences, the more your network will grow.
