BAFTA & BIFA nominated director Gordon Napier is originally from the Highlands of Scotland and has a Master of Fine Art in Film Directing from The University of Edinburgh, his work there earned him the highly coveted UK Prince William BAFTA & Warner Bros. Film Scholarship. He also holds a BA(Hons) Photography & Film from Edinburgh Napier University.
Through his career he has enjoyed varied experience in the film industry, everything from working in non-creative roles on large productions like Harry Potter, 007: Skyfall and The Avengers through to directing intimate documentaries in the Mongolian Gobi Desert, and directing narrative drama films back home in Scotland. His focus has been primarily directing fiction projects which explore the complexities of the human condition contextualised by what we all have in common - the natural world.
My most recent film 1745 explores the story of two sisters torn from their home in Nigeria and sold into slavery in Scotland, where they escape their master and try to retake their freedom.
I’ve screened in competition at the London Short Film Festival, BFI London Film Festival, received the ‘Jury Special Mention’ at the Edinburgh International Film Festival 2017, nominated for a BAFTA & the BIFA for ‘Best British Short Film’ 2017, finalist at the Black International Film Festival won ‘Best Short Film’ at the prestigious Africa International Film Festival. As 1745 continues its festival run in 2018 it has been officially selected by the International Film Festival Rotterdam, the Glasgow Short Film Festival and the 42nd Cleveland International Film Festival.
