  • Location: London and Scotland
  • Career stage: Early

Simon Toner is a London-based film composer, musician and teacher who is happy to play whatever role he can in the Music and Sound Departments of wonderful films!

Most recently films he has been the composer for have been shown in London, Copenhagen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dumfries such as short film 'Good Girls' (dir. Niamh McKeown), winner of Best Short Film at Belfast Film Festival, screened at the Underwire Film Festival in Soho, Flickerfest International Short Film Festival on Bondi beach Australia and amongst others, the Edinburgh Short Film Festival and micro short 'Avoiding the Unexpected' at Copenhagen Underground Film Festival. Simon also composes for art installations, his own orchestral compositions, electronic music, for the psych-rock band Soufon Fang and various corporate advertising and funding campaigns, including work for Creative Scotland, The Hidden Door Festival and The Stove Collective. He plans to continue expansive output now he has moved to London with further collaboration with other talented filmmakers from Scotland and forging new collaborations wherever possible in London.

While studying his degree in Popular Music at Edinburgh Napier University and playing in a wide variety of bands in the Edinburgh music scene and across Scotland, he has carved out a career as a film composer working on over 10 short films this past year. His composition for film draws from a broad fusion of styles and utilises a network of talented musicians and his experience in utilising recording technology to provide the choice tone and soundscape to suit the film. He is a firm part of the Scottish network of filmmakers and musicians (and their London diaspora!) met during his career of collaborations since he began playing music professionally during high school.
