Paul Blinkhorn

Writer and Director

  • Location: Manchester
  • Career stage: Early
  • Freelancer: Available

Paul is one of this year's Open Horizons #2 cohort with Northern Film + Media (supported by the Film and Television Charity) as well as being on the Widening the Lens programme with Encounters Film Festival (supported by ScreenSkills).

He is principally a writer, director and producer and has experience across short film, audio drama and theatre.

His short comedy script 'The Man at the Bottom of the Garden' made the final 50 (out of 6803 scripts) in InterConnected with BBC Writersroom in April 2020 - the project will see four shorts filmed using video-messaging software during lockdown and broadcast across the BBC's platforms.

Paul has also worked as a runner, first and second AD, assistant producer and  producer in short film, music video and audio drama.

After taking time out to care for two young children Paul is 'returning' to the industry and is actively seeking out entry-level opportunities in television and film.

His film work has screened at festivals in Austrailia, France, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, Romania, Spain and the United States as well as at the Academy Award qualifying Tirana International Film Festival in Albania.

As a writer-director his short film pitch for ‘The End’ developed with film and television puppeteer Julie Frost was runner-up in The Pitch Film Competition in January and narrowly missed out on securing £30,000 short film funding and production support. The project has since attached producer Julie Foy (one of the producers behind 2018's Academy Award-winning short film ‘The Silent 'Child’).

He has previously received support from the Film and Television Charity, the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Council.

As a director-producer he was recently selected as one of the finalists in Audible's Audio Drama Production Competion. Audio drama credits for BBC Audio Drama Award winning Wireless include: (as director and producer) the forthcoming four-part crime series ‘Omega’ by Elizabeth Parikh, (as director and assistant producer) ‘Night of the Orchid’ by Marty Ross, ‘I Heart Amy’ by Elizabeth Parikh, (as director) ‘The Mighty Carlins’ by Collin Doyle – featuring actor Shane Rimmer (selected to feature as part of the HEAR Now: The Audio Fiction and Arts Festival 2014 and the UK Radio Drama Festival 2015) and ‘Country Life’ by Peter Briffa.

Paul has staged worked which has been seen at venues including Oldham Coliseum, HOME, the Old Red Lion (London), Tristan Bates (London), Theatre 503 (London), Manchester Library Theatre, Contact Theatre (Manchester) and the New Diorama. He was also Trainee Associate Director at the New End Theatre, where he directed the UK premiere of 74 Georgia Avenue by Tony and Academy Award nominated writer Murray Schisgal.
