As a result of her career as an actor and movement director, Jess has a combined knowledge of text and movement. The culmination of this work emerged from an extension of LeCoq’s The Elements during her time at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. She approached this through the collaboration of movement and poetry, with original writing by herself, Jess draws on Laban terminology and the influence of Chekhov's Psychological Gesture.
In company with influences such as Rudolf Laban, Michael Chekhov and Jacques LeCoq, Jess is inspired by the work of Pina Bausch, whose words underpin the ethos of her work ; ‘I am not interested in how people move, but what moves them.’
Particularly interested in the connection between language and movement, Jess investigates the way turns of phrases, imagery and vocal sounds can evoke a physical reaction. Because of this, when working as a movement director, her work is rooted in the emotions, images, and sense of the text, allowing the movement to be intertwined in the story. Jess is interested in investigating how movement can inspire language and language can inspire movement.
