Watch the first webinar from the Making Virtual Production Real season

The first of a series of webinars on virtual production is now available to view online. It forms part of ScreenSkills’ Making Virtual Production Real season, exploring the rapidly evolving use of virtual production and providing an overview of the latest developments in its application in film and television.

The season, continuing into 2022, combines online webinars led by leading virtual production (VP) pioneers with open day visits to virtual production studios across the country. With the pandemic further accelerating the need for productions to adopt a more virtual approach to filmmaking, the season addresses the need for new skills among the screen industry workforce.

Matt Rank, Manager of Virtual Production at Netflix, took part in the first of a series of four planned webinars. In Virtual Production is Production – a beginners guide, Matt gave an overview of VP techniques and spoke about how the technology is offering filmmakers new creative opportunities.

The second webinar, CreaTech: The Collision of Creative Technologies, discussed how the convergence of new technologies are shaping a new working landscape and different screen cultures are learning to work together, with a focus on the new career paths opening up as a result. Moderated by executive producer Philip Dolling, the panel included speakers from VP practitioners Target 3D, White Light, Bild Studios and Rebellions Film and TV studios.

The first open day was held on 5 November and invited industry professionals to visit ARRI’s state-of-the-art Mixed Reality Production stage in West London. It gave visitors the chance to witness the cutting-edge technology in action with practical demonstrations of different set-ups that offered an introduction to the creative possibilities available.

The next webinar, taking place on 21 January, explores new and emerging roles within VP. Find more information and details on how to book, here.

Entry level applicants with a proven interest in virtual production can sign up for the next open day with a site visit to London's Garden Studios on 27 January.

Producers, designers, art directors, line producers, production managers and 1st ADs can sign up for the following virtual production open day, taking place on 8 February at Epic Games. Details on how to sign up will be available on www.screenskills.com.

This work is supported by the BFI, awarding National Lottery funds to ScreenSkills to deliver BFI’s Future Film Skills Strategy.
