Making Virtual Production Real: a beginner's guide

Matt Rank is Manager of Virtual Production (UK and EMEA) at Netflix. He gives an overview of the latest virtual production techniques and discusses how the technology offers filmmakers new creative opportunities.

Virtual Production is Production - A Beginner's Guide is the first event in the ScreenSkills Making Virtual Production Real season.

Matt shares what he has learned from working on both big and complex productions, like The Mandolorian and Jurassic World, as well as lean and nimble ones.

This session is supported by ScreenSkills using National Lottery funds awarded by the BFI as part of the Future Film Skills programme.

About Matt Rank

Throughout his career Matt has supervised digital units on location and worked at Industrial Light & Magic, Framestore and Audiomotion Studios exploring the many disciplines that now make up digital production - from motion and performance capture to volumetric and world capture.

More recently, he has taken his learnings from franchises such as Star Wars and James Bond, and applied them across features, series and documentaries, big and small at Netflix.

Today, he continues to support the studio’s local slate and helps educate about virtual production techniques and best practices across the industry.
