Six productions that contributed to the Film Skills Fund have been selected as part of the BFI’s Great8 showcase ahead of this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Now in its sixth edition, the Great8 showcase selects new productions from emerging UK filmmakers to present to buyers and festival programmers in the run-up to the film-buying market at Cannes, with the aim of securing distribution deals in national and international markets.

Last year’s selection included the likes of Fund contributors Blue Jean, Aftersun and Scrapper, each going on receive international acclaim and BAFTA nominations following their Cannes debuts.

Hoping to repeat some of that success are this year’s six contributing titles: Brides, Bring Them Down, The Fall of Sir Douglas Weatherford, On Falling, The Salt Path and Surviving Earth.

Across the productions, 14 trainees were welcomed onto set as part of ScreenSkills flagship new entrant programme, Film Trainee Finder, offering paid placements in a range of below-the-line production roles to those taking their first steps in the industry. In addition, a further three candidates received vital hands-on experience through production placements via other mid-career and industry transfer ScreenSkills initiatives.

We wish each production the best of luck for the festival and thank them for their contribution.
