About
Current work in part time roles in Caniad (Film Making Team, Marketing Team, Forum, Big Chats, and recently promoted to Caniad Involver). A charity for mainly mental health issues and substance misuse, and related areas. Unpaid.
Also work at IEC (Incredible Edible Colwyn) as a Gardener and Farmer, also part-time and unpaid. Jobs include growing vegetables and delivering/carrying them, repairing vandalism, speaking to members of the public, recruitment, attending meetings, promotion of the company, networking with community and organisations.
Also a community Covid volunteer, and worker with the homeless, and street cleaner, litter picker, trolley collector, repairer/reporter of vandalism, etc. Freelance/independent, and on ad-hoc basis, part time and unpaid. Since Covid began in March 2020 onwards, but was previously already a worker with the homeless anyway, and part-time refuse collector.
Also a part-time race marshal, sometimes paid and sometimes unpaid, since 2011.
Work with various other community groups and projects; and Writers' Room at TAPE Community Music and Film; have been in several other regional writing groups. Used to host and perform at and run, a poetry and music event mainly in Rhos-on-Sea, called Wordy, which I took over from someone else, but we later lost the venue and then Covid started. (Performance poet, writer, several other things. Have also been a journalist and was formerly an NUJ member.) Some part-time ad-hoc shifts in a local bookshop. Office skills and experience, in a number of organisations, going back to childhood (including organising and working at festivals). Before Caniad (from 1/1/2019) I worked all 2018 for Eternal Media. I was on a film making and media course after winning a place via a competition promoted by Disability Arts Cymru, of which I am still a member. Have also done some informal promotion/publicity for Ocean Film Festival, Mountain Film Festival, Top Dog Film Festival, and Iris Prize Film Festival and Eternal Media.
Currently undergoing further/ongoing training in Caniad, and in Prison In Reach.
Hope to go on a film course/s at GLLM at some point in the future. Several arts related qualifications from there and elsewhere.

Caniad Involver
Job: Caniad Involver [unpaid role, since 1/1/2019] Company: 'Caniad', North Wales, Wales, UK. After the 4 top films reached the final of a competition on the media and filmmaking course with Eternal Media, we were told that 4 of us would be offered jobs with Caniad. This would be unpaid and initially of 2 years' duration, although subsequently due to Covid since March 2020 our contracts have been repeatedly extended. It was meant to be repayment for the cost of training us on the media course, even though (in my case at least) I was selected by winning a competition. 4 of us were chosen. One was immediately sent away to the Fundraising Department (and remains there to this day), despite wishing to make films. The remaining 3 of us were sent to work in the Marketing Group/Marketing Team and (concurrently) the Filmmaking Team. One then left, because he moved areas and travel became unfeasible. The two of us were then separated and prevented contact. I since learned he left his recovery accommodation and is in recovery, is housed, has got work/sport, and now has a partner and children. I am therefore now the one remaining person left in that job. We have since had numerous changes of line-manager, over 4 years of Covid, and other staff/members have rapidly come and gone. I still have longterm projects to complete for them, luckily unaffected by the destruction of the website and all Caniad's data. One of my projects is a long manual of acronyms. Since it was not yet online, it was not destroyed in the data wipe. Other projects I am still working on, include research into housing providers and transport providers in North Wales. My training in 2019-2020 started to introduce me to the field of working in mental health and substance misuse. After Covid began in March 2020, all our training was suspended. Later meetings started online, but my computer was not able to attend them after a few partially-successful attempts. We restarted in-person meetings and when I was finally allowed to attend, our line-manager was replaced, and communications broke down completely. They stopped informing me of meetings, then blamed me for missing meetings I was unaware of. Caniad is a charity concerned with mental health issues, substance misuse, homelessness, unemployment, offenders/prisoners/prison-leavers, recovery/rehabilitation, gambling, etc. My training and CPD has lapsed since 2020, due to none having been available during Covid. I am now back in training, and have also started training with 'Prison In Reach'. This may lead to work with them, supporting people who are leaving prison; but more training needs to be completed first, and there are further stages in the application process, at each of which you can be rejected. Recently I passed a course in Gambling Awareness. In Caniad I have applied for a place on a course in Committee Skills. My current rank is Caniad Involver. I attend Big Chat meetings, Marketing meetings, and after 4 years have finally been allowed to start attending Forum meetings. I also attend external events as a promoter for Caniad. The most recent was at a substance misuse conference run and headed by 'SMART Recovery'. Outside Caniad I have been its unofficial promoter, to numerous external organisations.

'Approaching Shadows' (c.2022), dir. Steve Swindon, 'TAPE Community Music and Film' [Full-length feature-film; drama, contemporary horror, thriller.] This project was developed over several years, 2015-2022, by 'TAPE Community Music and Film' and the 'TAPE Writers' Room'. After the development phase, there has been an additional phase of relaunches and promotions, 2022-2023. Several of the team, myself included, have worked as unofficial Promoters. Staff involved are Steve Swindon (director/producer, screenwriter), assisted by Andrew Turner (director/lead actor, 'British Winters'). 'TAPE Community Music and Film' has a small regular unpaid staff group of editors and group facilitators. Then there are groups including 'TAPE Writers' Room' and other writing groups. Below them, the film involved a much wider group of hundreds of community members, writers, editors, storyboard developers, extras, etc. Not all those involved were, or could be, credited. ROLES: Development Team Member [several roles], Continuity, Editing Team [& several other roles] Reserve Film Crew Member [sequence of the attack on the paramedics; I was not used]. Writer/Assistant Writer, Storyboard Assistant Developer, Writers' Room Member, Original Concept Team Member, Consultant, Specialist Consultant, Researcher, Assistant Editor; etc. Script Development Team Member, Script Researcher, Storyline Researcher/Fact-checker, Error Checker; Focus Group Participant; Promoter; etc.

'Video No. 4' (2018/2019) 'Eternal Media' [my individual project music video. On substance-misuse, homelessness, recovery from substance-misuse; and the process of working on the media course.] Placed 2nd in the final 4 videos. (See description in the entry for the 'County Lines' projects on the same course.) It was the only video that fulfilled the original brief. It also, in the final version I submitted, had precise synchronization of sound and image, with cuts at exactly the right points. This took several months of intensive editing. I also acted in the video. We had to work on eachother's projects as well. In another music video, the director/actor was seated in a 1950s classic American car, singing and playing music. We needed an in-car sequence of shots upwards towards him, while other camera operators filmed the exterior shots of the same sequence. Out of shot, additional members of the crew roughly bounced the car around to simulate movement. As there were external shots at the same time, there could not be a visible cameraman inside the vehicle. Our boss suggested using something like a GoPro. However... A GoPro or similar did not work, as we could not get it to turn on and off at will, or react to changes in the movement of the car. Being extremely small, I saw a possible solution. I offered to film the upwards shots myself, from the unusual position of the footwell and between the actor-director's legs. I braced my back against/into the footwell to avoid camera-shake. This shoot took one whole day to accomplish. The result was a full music video by and for that actor-director.

Film Crew Member: Lead Clapper Loader, Assistant Script Supervisor (Prompt), Set Dresser, Location Manager, etc.
'A Significant Change' (c.2019) 'Iris Prize Film Festival'/'Unique'/'NHS Wales'/ 'NHS England'/'Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB)' /'Aberconwy Mind' (et.al.) [NHS instructional/training video, aimed at GPs and other primary healthcare professionals. An LGBTQIA+ community project. Advice on correct treatment of patients in the NHS. An 'Educational' grade/category short film.] NB: 'Iris', based in Swansea, with an annual film festival in Cardiff, and several outreach events and promotions year-round around the UK and abroad, is a film festival and film production company specializing in LGBTQIA+ short films (and some feature films). It showcases firstly films from Wales, then films from the rest of the UK, then films from Europe and the rest of the world. There are different categories of prizes, for example Foreign Film or Welsh Film. Community Film is its own category, I worked on its subcategory of Community Films from Wales/North Wales. On this project, the lead direction and production was carried out by 'Iris'. They did the camerawork, sound, lighting, vehicles, site security, project insurance, legal, official film promotion, contracts, editing, animation sequence, graphics, titles/credits, and final version of the storyboarding. Several members of the behind-the-scenes crew were credited as assistant directors, assistant producers, assistant writers/screenwriters, and lead script supervisors. Overall the development of the project, from start to finish, took over 4 years; with an additional year of editing and then launches/promotions. Many of the crew members, myself included, worked as unofficial Promoters during this phase. Members of the development team included prompters and script developers. One provided the voiceover, on an audio sequence I did not work on. Others acted in the film, though we did get an external male actor from 'Aberconwy Mind'. He was the final selection of actor for the role of Unpleasant Doctor No. 1, for which I was understudy. The role of ALEX/Patient No. 2 required an additional external actor to be found, this task was given to myself. It was stipulated that if we were unable to cast the role, the character would be written out of the film. So it was a position of responsibility, and I was determined to find an actor for the role. ROLES: Film Crew Member: Lead Clapper Loader, Assistant Script Supervisor (Prompt), Set Dresser, Location Manager, Continuity, Runner, etc. [& several other roles not listed] Also: Assistant Wardrobe Supervisor; Cleaner; Supervisor/Trainer to Assistant Clapper Loader. Development Team: Assistant Writer/Screenwriter, Script Development Team Member, Focus Group Member, Interviewer, Assistant (Unofficial) Promoter, Actor/Understudy: Original Understudy (for role of Unpleasant Doctor No. 1) [replaced before filming]; Researcher, Specialist Researcher, Original Concept Development Team Member, Note-Taker; Location Scout; Props Manager; Props Buyer; Assistant Wardrobe Supervisor; Talent Scout; Casting Assistant, Props Construction, Botanical Assistant (some props were living plants, all of which I grew/supplied/maintained). [& several other roles not listed] As Talent Scout and Casting Assistant, I was given the major problem of finding and casting an external actor for the role of Patient No. 2. They had to fulfil an extremely specific person qualification. I approached relevant groups around the UK, and had 2 realistic expressions of interest from actors in the USA. As there was no budget for remuneration or expenses/travel, I had to decline their applications for the role. Later I tried an alternative route, and personally directly found and recruited the actor, just before the character was due to be 'scratched' in the absence of an actor. Props I made from scratch included professional-quality doctors' ID badges and lanyards (but made without any computer technology), and a hand-sewn felt cactus. I also sourced healthcare posters and leaflets to add authenticity, in order to convert the business premises to several different fictional doctors' surgeries and clinics. Some of the development team brought the costumes, and the rest of the props including in-trays, lever-arch files, books, phones, etc. As Continuity I had to ensure the costumes and props were in the same or different places, with obvious changes to indicate the passage of time over days/weeks/months, props added or removed, costumes fully changed between scenes, and so on. As Runner I was a general go-between, caterer, messenger, script-deliverer, fixer, coordinator, problem-solver, troubleshooter, errand-boy, etc. Some of this role overlapped with script supervision (prompting). The most serious issue I faced in my capacity as Runner, arose on the day prior to the shoot. Ability to act on initiative: The day before the shoot, I had a strange feeling that there was a problem with our leading actress. She did not respond to general or welfare enquiries by email. I had no phone at the time, and would be out of touch with the rest of the team/crew/cast until the start of the actual set-up and shoot. I leafed through several bags of papers, scripts, shooting schedules, etc., and found a document indicating on the small-print of one of the contracts, the name of the director-producer's hotel. I used the internet maps to locate the hotel. I knew the film crew were arriving that day. So I took a bus and then walked to the hotel. Speaking to reception, I asked for my boss, and they said he had arrived recently. I waited in the lobby, he came down to see me and asked why I (even as his Runner!) was there. I said I had a strange bad feeling that there was a sudden problem with our lead actress. He asked how I knew. I said I didn't know, I just suddenly got a bad feeling there was a problem with her. My boss then said she had suddenly pulled out of the film. At no notice we managed to find another actress to replace her. (Unfortunately, the lady who pulled out, has since died.) Among the minor things I did was coordinate actors and crew turning up at the right place and time, and work on securing sufficient parking spaces. I also had to carry items, get refreshments, remind people to attend, etc. After the shoot, I helped as a Promoter. I attended launches, but only in North Wales. The film was shown in South Wales, the UK, and the USA. I contacted many external groups to promote the film, and to invite them to attend launches and screenings. RESULTS: Shortlisted for an Award at the Iris Prize Film Festival, at national level, in the category of Community Film. Was a runner-up in this festival, in the national film awards for LGBTQIA+ short films from Wales.

'County Lines' (2018) [video on 'County Lines' drugs gangs, etc.] Won a place (2017) on a year-long media and filmmaking course (Jan-Dec 2018) based in Wrexham and around North Wales. (Boss: Marcus Fair, Eternal Media, Wrexham.) Had to make a video to audition in the competition, in order to enter in the first place. I took the spot/route for physically disabled entrants. There were other entry streams, such as mental health conditions, learning difficulty/disability, substance misuse, and prison-leavers/former offenders. I learned about the existence of these other streams later. And got to meet different people, each with their own varied challenges. Having no equipment, I used my contacts in TAPE Community Music and Film, to create my audition video (by Steve Swindon, boss of TAPE). From my audition video, I was selected, and was then one of the few people to make it to the end of the one-year course. Towards the end of the course, we worked together on a number of projects including a music video, studio recording and filming session for the same, and promotional videos. During the summer of 2018 Eternal Media was engaged in making a series of documentaries, staff promotional films (HMP Berwyn prison in Wrexham), and videos featuring local survivors of substance misuse and/or mental health episodes. Some of our work covered homelessness, offending behaviour, and relapsing. A principal partner was the police, and we made several items connected to 'county lines', cuckooing of vulnerable people, and other related issues. In the 'County Lines' video, I was lead/front camera operator for an interview held outdoors with a senior male police officer standing in front of a police car. For the same video, I was the in-car camera operator as we shot the action sequence of a simulated high-speed police car chase. I am very light in weight and small in size, and was unsecured in the back of the police car. I also dislike car travel and speed. Nevertheless I managed to obtain usable footage for the film, and avoid damaging the camera. At the time of the interview sequences I also did various shots of the police vehicle. The whole action sequence incorporated a (real or simulated?) police drugs raid, although I was not on that particular crew/shoot. We made group or individual music videos and spent the rest of the year editing them in the editing suite in Wrexham, in between working on some other projects. We also were filmed ourselves for participant/course videos; on location, at work in Wrexham, and being interviewed. My video, due to circumstances arising on the course, quickly became a solo project. It was not the official winner of the 4 videos that reached the final, but was the 2nd-placed finalist. It was also the only video that stuck to the brief we had been given.

Certificates to Uncertificated, mainly. Other
1982 (Age 5) to CURRENT: Actor (and other production roles); also later an extra, formerly listed as an extra in a directory based in Caernarfon. In the mid 1990s acting and drama were mostly taken over by Live Action Roleplay (specialist in fantasy combat, as both human and monster characters; played orcs, half-orcs, dwarves, trolls, etc.). LRP uses latex based or foam based weapons around a rigid or flexible carbon core. Then also got into battle re-enactment (real weapons), in both fantasy combat and living history. Have done plenty of non-combat roles and explaining/demonstrating traditional crafts etc., but specialised in active combat. (Once was dared/bet that I would not go to York and back in full chainmail - so I did.) Eras I have portrayed include Viking, Dark Ages, English Civil War, Hundred Years' War, Wars of the Roses, and several other periods in history. My craft specialisms when not fighting/marching included weaving, dyeing, and herbal medicine. Many years later (a few years ago) I was invited (since I am a historian, now specialise in ACW, and they found out I was a re-enactor) to take part in a rare UK-based American Civil War re-enactment - but unfortunately I had other commitments and had to decline. In all these fields (re-enactment, living history, fantasy combat, LRP, regular acting/theatre/drama) I also made my own and sometimes other people's costumes. I'm also a textile artist. In film since 2018 I have worked in many aspects of pre-production, location work, and post-production. This includes camerawork, editing, clapper loading, Runner, set dresser, location scout, interviewer, interviewee, location manager, assistant script supervisor (prompt), etc. I was once (before this) very briefly Assistant Make-up Artist to drag artist 'Tanya Tightsdown', in Bangor; and her assistant Dresser. I have also been a writer, developer, storyboard assistant, consultant, researcher, etc. On the film 'Approaching Shadows' I helped advise and plan the sequence with murder victims in bodybags being dragged into a lake. I also worked as Continuity on that film. Outside of shoots I have scouted locations, and worked on obtaining the necessary permissions. Currently I am helping promote Caniad. Past projects in journalism have been interviews with homeless people in Rhyl and Bangor, and a few other locations in North Wales. As a race marshal, that role includes a lot of varied and complex errands and duties, on the spot problem-solving, and so on. I distance-walk, and past walks have included: Across Scotland; Across part of Ireland and NI; Across Greater London; then in 2021 from Cardiff to Newbury/Greenham, the 40th anniversary of a walk I did now twice aged 4 and 44. In 2022 I came first in Storm The Orme, running/walking the course in 1 hour 7 minutes despite being the only disability athlete entered. Luckily I did not do that in chainmail. The summer before Covid was my most recent expedition as a mountain leader, up Snowdon. I am in Birmingham again for the annual national disability championships in my category, I do the following sports: Powerlifting, Basketball, Hockey, Shooting, Football; and Athletics (60m, 100m, 200m, 4x100m Relay); all in veteran age categories. The rest of the year I am a distance runner in distances of 60m/100m/200m sprints, 400m, 4x100m/4x400m Relays, 800m, 1 Mile, and all distances up to around 5 miles. My main distance event is 5k (PB 22 minutes); but the longest distance I ever did was a 30 mile mountain ultra distance. This covers track, cross-country, beach/sand, multi-terrain, mountain/hill/fell, trail, ice, mud, etc. I've also done some Orienteering but not that recently. I've been the runner in Men's Sprint Triathlon, and also marshal at adult/youth triathlons. When I was a child and then 18-21 I was very much into fantasy and sci-fi. As a teenager I started a jewellery business called Peaceful Pendants, selling unisex jewellery I made and running stalls at festivals. Since then I have taken more specialised courses in making jewellery and in coppersmithing; and branched out for a while into stained glass. Other qualifications include pottery/ceramics, textiles, and patchwork. I have done archery and crossbow, but there have been no competitions in my category for a few years. In my Prison In Reach training I passed Team Building in April 2023, and did part of a course on Gambling Awareness. The other year I did a residential course in Embroidery in Birmingham and was the only man. Courses I have passed include Report Writing, Research Methods, Combined Studies, Local History, Statistics, Statistics in Psychology, Presentations, Technical Drawing, Archaeological Illustration, Woodwork, Metalwork, Electronics, Design, Wilderness, Ecology, Conifer Identification, Spring Fungi, Geology, Herbalism [to diploma level], Complementary Medicine, Psychology, Philosophy, Sociology, Social Psychology, Criminology, Criminal Psychology, Behavioural Psychology, Biopsychology, Equality & Diversity, First Aid, First Aid in the Workplace, and many more. I worked as a first aider for years. I've also done a lot of independent research and consulting. Other jobs I have done include Shop Assistant, General Assistant, factory worker, athlete management/representation, trainee sports official, pieceworker/homeworker, welder/assembler, picker/packer, community worker, painter-decorator, fencebuilder, landscaper, gardener, drystone waller, urban farmer, horticultural labourer, market-gardener, stallholder, forestry worker, artist, etc.

Certificates/Diplomas LANGUAGES
[Also includes some courses at/by/from: Adult Learning Wales/ALW, formerly WEA/Workers' Educational Association; Acen (Welsh courses); Popeth Cymraeg/Welsh Unlimited (Welsh courses); Grw^p Llandrillo Menai (GLLM); other providers] LANGUAGES: Passed courses in the following languages other than English. French, German, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Spanish, Welsh. Also ATTENDED courses in the following: Arabic, Catalan, Dutch, Galician, Scottish-Gaelic. (Also, many years before, did courses in Russian - but in England.) DLL was abolished in c.2017 and all part-time mature students were removed from the university. All or most of the Modern Languages department has since been closed down, apart from full-time provision for mostly non-mature (18-21) language-specialist degree students. The Japanese department was closed down and replaced by a department of Chinese (Mandarin) and Business. Most academic type courses at alternative providers, in subjects like languages, have been shut down even if you self-fund, unless you are a student aged 16-21. Another effect is that there have been cuts to all the provision of Welsh classes, part-time Welsh, Welsh-medium modules and degrees, and so on. By the late 1990s they had already discontinued Philosophy and Classics, Greek and Hebrew. They then cut Theology except for those entering Christian priesthood, which excludes anyone who might want to study it without believing it or working in the field. Those training as priests can still, in higher degrees, study New Testament Greek and Biblical Hebrew, possibly some Latin. With the closure of DLL the remaining providers are ALW, and GLLM. In-person Welsh courses are still available at Popeth Cymraeg, Y Llety Arall, WLPAN, and intensive residential-only immersive centres. In the old system of credits, a degree was worth 360 credits, a diploma 240 credits, and a certificate 120 credits. Some courses have a weighting of 10 or 20 credits.
