About
BIO:
I’ve been a TV/film/theatre actor since my teens and didn't do my screenwriting MA til my 30’s. Before this I wrote some comedy sketches for TV, including the BAFTA winning Ch 4 UK sketch show SMACK THE PONY and SKY’s NO LIMIT.
My first short film, BREAKING OUT (dir. by Oscar winner Marienela Maldonaldo), premiered in competition in Cannes, was selected by 20 international festivals & won Best European short at Angers. This and my first feature script ONE WHITE CROW got me taken on by lit agent Casarotto’s.
I wrote for series 2 and 3 of ground breaking teen drama, SOFIA’S DIARY, for Sony UK, broadcast on Channel 5, but which originated as a plot-interactive web series on Bebo – 8 years before Bandersnatch.
Since then, my short THE OTHER SIDE was produced by the Rutger Hauer Film Factory; I was a participant of North by Northwest European Lab & Berlin Talent Campus & have had commissions from RHI/Hallmark to write a treatment for a 4 hour mini-series based on THE LITTLE MERMAID and Landscape/eOne in the US to create a 10 hour historical drama about the explorers STANLEY & LIVINGSTONE.
My feature script ONE WHITE CROW is under option for the 3rd time in 12 years so maybe 3rd time lucky!
I produced, wrote and acted in short dramedy about grief, KILLING CHRISTMAS, last year, based on a play I wrote for an LA theatre. After 18 months of festivals it has won awards for acting, script and Best Short. I’m currently filming a short version of #MENTAL – a dark comedy about a woman’s first episode of mental illness which was shortlisted by the BBC Comedy Writersroom, the Sister Films SCREENSHOT contest and Channel 4 BLAPS scheme.
I write female centric comedy and drama with female characters of ALL ages.
Often I write about forms of prejudice, be it around colour, creed, class, age (the under aged and the older aged) and challenge accepted ethical codes. More often I write about unusual conditions of the mind and mental illness and always I write about death, ageing and other comedic no brainers – loaded with painful existential angst. If I can, I love to treat such serious stuff with a dark comedic tone and play that bittersweet tragi-comic/dramedy knife edge.
A history buff, I also write historical drama and am particularly knowledgeable on the 19th century.
My UK/Africa-hopping childhood & a lot of life experience now, has led me to people, politics & conditions of many kinds: the privileged, impoverished, disenfranchised & criminal.
I grew up around and have experience of (personal and/or professional) addiction, mental illness, homelessness, physical disability and 3 brands of racism on 3 separate continents, including apartheid.
In the last 10 years I’ve also been in a racially ‘mixed’ marriage whilst living in the US – which has been interesting and frankly bloody scary.
I have a passion for satire, am a philosophy and history buff, an avid reader, water obsessive & classic motorcycle rider.
