In this workshop, Jan Genesis will provide an insight into the making of reality show formats and his role as a director - with a particular focus on the ever popular shows Love Island and I’m a Celebrity Get me Out of Here. He will delve into how reality television has evolved since the days of Big Brother and some of the key differences between the shows he has worked on. Jan will also detail some of the key considerations when setting up a reality show, the role of the series director and why having multiple reality directors across the series is an essential contributor to the success of these shows.

Over the past decade Jan Genesis has directed 16 series of the most watched reality TV shows in the UK, including Love Island and I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here. Despite being most well known for his role as senior director on Love Island, Jan has an eclectic range of experience across multiple genres. He has directed a range of entertainment shows such as Pointless and Blind Date, observational documentaries such as 24 hours in Police Custody and sports shows including Channel 4’s Formula 1 show.

This event is supported by the ScreenSkills Television Skills Fund which invests in training for the freelance television workforce thanks to contributions from the BBC, Channel 4 and Channel 5. 

It is part of a ScreenSkills programme managed by the Indie Training Fund to support freelancers to upskill and stay connected, helping keep the industry resilient in these difficult times.
