This workshop with self-shooting director Dan Donnelly is aimed at beginners who are wanting to gain more knowledge on how to use a Sony FS7 camera. We will be running two workshops - Group 1 and Group 2 - to maximise the opportnity for participation. Each workshop will be run over two sessions.

Group 1 Wednesday 12th August

  • Part 1: 1000 - 1100
  • Part 2: 1300 - 1400

Group 2 Friday 14th August

  • Part 1: 1000 - 1100
  • Part 2: 1300 - 1400

As there are only a limited number of places on these workshops, tickets will be allocated via a ballot system to give all those interested a fair chance to secure a place.

Applications for group 1 will close at noon on Friday 7th August. Successful candidates will be confirmed via email by Monday 10th August.

Applications for group 2 will close at midnight on Tuesday 11th August. Successful candidates will be confirmed via email by Wednesday 12th August.

This workshop is part of our week-long focus on camera and sound. So whether you're filming in the most extreme environments in the world or right on your own doorstep, we will explore the techniques and skills needed to capture picture and sound across a broad range of unscripted TV.

What it covers

Part 1 Sony FS7 camera: set up and tour. The Sony FS7 camera has consistently been a popular choice within television and the ability to use it is among the most sought-after skills for programme-makers. In this introductory session the tutor will talk you through what the FS7 is and how to get it ready for a broadcast assignment.

Part 2 using the Sony FS7 camera: what are the dos and don’ts, hints and tips? This introductory session looks at basic technicalities when using the Sony FS7 for broadcast. It will cover the main controls of Focus, Exposure, White Balance and Sound, as well tips on how to avoid some of the mistakes that novice users of the camera make. There will also be some time for your Questions and Answers.

Speaker

Dan Donnelly is a veteran self-shooting director, presenter and trainer. He spent 15 years at the BBC, working as a director, presenter and camera operator in factual formats such as observational documentary, food, consumer and current affairs. While at the BBC he began training staff in self-shooting skills. Now freelance, Dan teaches self-shooting and directing skills as well as working as a camera operator and director.

This event is supported by the ScreenSkills Television Skills Fund which invests in training for the freelance television workforce thanks to contributions from the BBC, Channel 4 and Channel 5.

It is part of a ScreenSkills programme managed by the Indie Training Fund to support freelancers to upskill and stay connected, helping keep the industry resilient in these difficult times.
