So you want to be…a wildlife filmmaker? With Sophie Darlington

In this session, we look at the role of wildlife filmmaker with Sophie Darlington. It is part of our week-long focus on camera and sound. So whether you're filming in the most extreme environments in the world or right on your own doorstep, we will explore the techniques and skills needed to capture picture and sound across a broad range of unscripted TV.   

So you want to be... is a new strand of online sessions which focuses on specific roles within TV. You will get the chance to go behind a job title and get the inside track, as told by the people who know these jobs inside out.

If you’ve ever wondered what a particular role actually involves and what it will take to get there as you look to progress in your career - or you are new to the industry and hoping to get some great insider tips to start your career - this could be the masterclass for you.

The speakers will take us through the highs and lows of a specific role, as well as provide top tips and advice about how to carry out the job successfully and how to get that particular role in the first place. This is followed by audience Q&A where you have the chance to ask the experts.

Since 1991 Sophie Darlington has worked happily as a filmmaker and cinematographer specialising in natural history in remote locations throughout the world from 78 degrees South to 78 degrees North with a lot of Africa in between. Sophie won a BAFTA in 2016 and was accepted as a BAFTA member in 2018. Her credits include BBC’s Seven Worlds, Dynasties - Lions, The Hunt, Disney Nature's Penguins and Netflix’ Our Planet. In the future Sophie plans to spend more time promoting the role of camerawomen in wildlife filmmaking as well as teaming up with young creatives with an expertise in technology to explore new techniques and alternative avenues for natural history content.

It is part of a ScreenSkills programme managed by the Indie Training Fund to support freelancers to upskill and stay connected, helping keep the industry resilient in these difficult times.
