Inside The Edit founder Paddy Bird gives a one hour masterclass on creative editing. The ability to look at footage, structure scenes, create drama and tension are just a few of the skills required to edit film and television. Showing numerous examples, Paddy talks through the creative process of how shots are selected, the order they go in and how to design the emotional journey for the audience. He also outlines how a professional editor creates the tone of a scene and structures the pacing to keep the audience on the edge of their seat.

This session is part of our week-long focus on inside the cutting room. From building the story, to adding music and sound effects, we reveal the inside scoop on the world of the edit and the jobs available in it.

Speaker

Paddy Bird has spent over twenty years editing many of the biggest documentaries, entertainment shows and reality TV for British and American television. After realising that most editors are self-taught and that no one was teaching the actual craft of editing he spent three years developing ‘Inside The Edit’, the industry’s first creative editing course which focuses solely on the art form and not the technical side of any software. Paddy is a voting member of the prestigious BAFTA Editing Chapter and is a consultant to major broadcasters, Advertising Agencies and Film Schools.

This event is supported by the ScreenSkills Television Skills Fund which invests in training for the freelance television workforce thanks to contributions from the BBC, Channel 4 and Channel 5.
