LED technology and virtual production for lighting and camera film crew

This course is designed to train film crews with experience across a range of crafts and competencies (including lighting and camera) in the use of working their specialist crafts within LED volume environments for the purpose of virtual productions (VP). Over two days, it will provide learners with the detailed knowledge, understanding and principles of how their roles may differ in virtual production and will offer hands-on experience to upskill them in working in with LED volumes in virtual production studios.

This course is supported by ScreenSkills as part of the BFI Future Film Skills programme using funds from the National Lottery.

Who it's for

Applicants should be working as crew in either lighting or camera department, and have at least 1 year of professional experience. 

What it covers

The course content will include:

  • 2 x full day in-person training at virtual production test stage in Guildford:
  • Introduction to the basics of the virtual production studio
  • In depth look at LED wall types and considerations for virtual production
  • Processing - multiple types
  • Brief coverage of camera tracking, 3D game engine and control software
  • In-depth look at LEDs and processing - delivered in partnership with Brompton Tech, as well as comparisons with other manufacturers
  • Introduction to LEDs and processing
  • Basics of systems and hardware
  • Using processing software
  • Technical aspects - fixture rotation, interpolation, low latency, temperature, custom resolution, bit rates
  • Calibration
  • New and emerging tools - HD calibration, frame remapping, dark magic, on screen colour adjustment, Dynacal
