As part of the Your life at work strand, we are offering training aimed at sharing workplace best practice as well as how you and your teams can stay healthy, happy, and productive at work.

Independent production companies often don’t have the need or budget for a full time HR role, and it can be difficult to find the right person to ask as and when people issues arise.

Each session will be tailored around the individual’s specific needs, addressing any of the many challenges of making sure your company is legally compliant in terms of contracts, policies, and procedures, to dealing with more specific issues around employee conduct and company culture.

Who it's for

These sessions are for independent production companies in unscripted TV looking to gain knowledge around general HR compliance, a specific area of HR that is causing an issue, or an area in which they are looking to improve their current offering.

Disclaimer: Due to FCA restrictions, we are not able to advise individuals on issues that may involve a claim being brought against a current or former employer.

We are committed to ensuring all our courses are accessible to everyone. This course is designed to be as interactive as possible. Please email USF@screenskills.com if you have any access requirements and we will be delighted to help, be that clarifying the form such interaction is likely to take or discussing reasonable adjustments.

What it covers

Each confidential 60-minute session will be tailored to the specific needs of each individual but can cover all areas of HR and workplace culture that are relevant to the industry.

Some of the typical areas we’d expect to cover include:

  • creating a compliant workplace (what you should have in place)
  • contracting issues and employment status
  • employment rights (who has what)
  • employee relations; how to deal with grievance and disciplinary issues
  • managing absence
  • creating a healthy company culture

Speaker:

Lisa Balderson is an experienced CIPD qualified HR consultant, who provides freelance support to film and TV indies. Initially working in awards, festivals and programming, Lisa has more than 15 years' experience in the film and TV industry, and has experience of HR from both sides, including within production environments. She is extremely familiar with the culture of these industries, how they work, and how HR practices can be implemented in this specific space.

She has previously worked for organisations such as BAFTA; BFI (London Film Festival/BFI Flare and TV Programming dept.); BBC; and Lion Television.

How to apply

This session will take place online via Zoom. Click ‘apply for ticket’ and follow the instructions to apply for your place: you must login or register before you are able to complete your application.

Places on these free online courses are limited and applications are often highly competitive. To stand the best chance of securing a place, please be sure to consider the following:

  • When asked to list your three most recent credits, please include the programme title and your job role.
  • When asked what you hope to gain from the course, please be concise but ensure you cover the specific elements of the topic you would like to gain knowledge of and what gaps in your skillset you believe the course may address. A rewording of the course title or a general comment on career progression does not tell us much about how this course would benefit you.

If you are no longer able to attend, we ask you to please use the “decline ticket” function on the right hand side of the page so that we can release your place. Our sessions are often oversubscribed so we’d like to give other freelancers the opportunity to fill available spots. Thank you for your consideration.

This course is supported by ScreenSkills, by the Unscripted TV Skills Fund thanks to contributions from broadcasters, SVoDs and production companies.

This course would normally cost participants to attend, but thanks to this support, we are able to offer it to you for free. If you fail to attend, we reserve the right to request reimbursement of costs, unless your place can be taken by someone else.
