How to succeed as a supervising art director

Age 18+

Talking point presents this course as part of the Industry Sessions, Senior Film Art Department Roles. It will examine the role of the supervising art director and how best to move up into this grade.

This session is supported by ScreenSkills using National Lottery funds awarded by the BFI as part of the Future Film Skills programme.

Who it's for

This course is tailored for a small group of practitioners with art directing experience, ideally those who are considering moving into the supervising art directing role.

What it covers

The following areas will be discussed:

  • the role of the supervising art director (across a range of budgets), which includes how this role liaises effectively with the production designer, set decorator, construction manager and props master;
  • moving up successfully to that grade from art director, the difference in job roles and expectations;
  • creating and running a budget;
  • managing workflow and scheduling.
