High-end TV: Developing location managers in Wales

Are you an assistant location manager or unit manager working in Wales who is keen to take the next step to location manager?
This bespoke course will be delivered by location manager and scout Tom Guy who has more than 20 years' experience working in television and will cover all of the essential skills needed to be an effective location manager including budgeting, licensing, contracting as well as managing location teams and external relationships.
The training also includes a fully funded and certified Health and Safety Fire Awareness for Locations module which will be delivered by Dragon Fire and Safety Services.
This programme is supported by the ScreenSkills High-end TV Fund with contributions from UK high-end TV productions.
Who it's for
This course is for assistant location managers and unit managers in high-end TV production who are based and work in Wales and are ready to step up into the role of location manager.

What it covers
This three day face-to-face course will cover all the essential skills and elements of the role to give the participants a comprehensive understanding of the role of location manager and will cover:
- budgeting for locations: estimating, controlling, and reporting
- licensing, permissions and risk management
- contracting for private/public spaces and negotiating access
- interpreting scripts and understanding production requirements
- case study: breaking down a sample script and creating a location brief
- approaching and securing locations: best practice and etiquette
- taking and sharing location photographs professionally
- organising tech recces and managing the unit base
- managing location teams and working with other departments (e.g. ADs, production)
- H&S and legal responsibilities on location
- communication and leadership skills
- managing high-pressured situations and conflict on location
- inclusive and accessible working practices in locations
How to apply
This course will be delivered at the Screen Alliance Wales Training and Education Centre at Wolf Studios Wales, Cardiff over the three days:
- Monday 27 October 09.30-16.30
- Monday 3 November 09.30-16.30
- Monday 10 November 09.30-16.30
There will also be an additional follow up session scheduled for participants to revisit content and ask additional questions.
Participants need to commit to attending all three sessions to complete the course.
Small bursaries may be available to assist with travel.
