ScreenSkills Select has endorsed 38 higher and further education courses since October 2019 as being of value to young people intent on working in the screen industries.
The ScreenSkills Select endorsement is designed to signpost prospective students to the courses that will provide industry-relevant skills as well as strong links with industry professionals and potential employers.
Before receiving endorsement, courses undergo rigorous assessment by industry experts to make sure they are industry relevant. Each ScreenSkills Select course is also reviewed and discussed annually to make sure education institutions can enhance their curricula in line with the ever-changing nature of the industry.
The 38 courses that have successfully been added to the ScreenSkills Select course directory are located throughout the UK and cover areas ranging from documentary directing and cinematography, to animation, digital effects and sound design.
Jim le Fevre, a Bafta-winning animation director and ScreenSkills Select industry evaluator, said: “The ScreenSkills Select process is a privilege to be part of, seeing examples of such great best practice in connecting education and the industry at such a fundamental level through higher education and further education courses. When done well, you can directly see the correlation of confident, inspired students who are ready to enter the industry equipped with knowledge and experience passed directly from current industry practitioners.
“The courses that successfully engage in the ScreenSkills process are both strongly independent and yet also supported by things such as the ScreenSkills Barometer. From the other side, it is apparent that members of the industry that engage in the ScreenSkills process also hugely benefit from being connected to rich sources of potential talent with the ability to inform and guide them."
Michelle Stein, producer and ScreenSkills Select industry evaluator, said: “I’ve enjoyed working across the Select process as an industry evaluator. The scheme really helps to bridge the gap between education and industry, signposting to students which courses have strongest industry links, and which are most likely to help them enter the film and TV workforce once they are finished”
Ben Thompson, academic lead and course leader of the BA (Hons) Film Production course at the University of Portsmouth, said: “This [Select] endorsement is a true kite mark of quality and provides prospective applicants and our current community of students and graduates that the course continues to be relevant, well-connected and industry focused.”
