ScreenSkills is asking for industry feedback on its development of the National Occupational Standards that inform the development of qualifications and apprenticeships in the screen industries.
During December 2025 and January 2026, we are planning to consult with professionals across the nations about the competencies, skills and knowledge that are needed to work in the screen industries relating to roles in productions. This will be done in order to update the existing and develop, brand new National Occupational Standards to reflect what best practice should look like for employees by industry.
We would like to get your feedback on the following new standards:
Production for Film and TV - which list the practical skills and knowledge needed to support the logistics, resourcing and shooting of productions through the phases of production from pre-production (commissioning) through to post production (delivery). These NOS cover the following roles: Assistant Directors department: Base runner, Floor runner, Third Assistant director, Second Assistant director, Crowd Second Assistant director, First Assistant director, Location department: Location assistant, Unit manager, Location coordinator, Assistant Location manager, Location manager, Supervising Location manager (HOD),
- Production department: Production assistant (Runner), Production secretary, Assistant Production coordinator, Production coordinator, Production manager, Line producer.
- Post Production for Film and TV – which list the practical skills and knowledge needed to support the post production process through editing, sound design, and visual effects. With the advent of Virtual Production, these can occur during the production process as well as at the end. These NOS cover the following roles: Post production assistant, Post production coordinator, Post production supervisor, Post production director.
- Production Accounting – which list the practical skills and knowledge needed to manage the financial aspects of the production, ensuring that all costs are accounted for and that the project stays within budget. Production accountants play a vital role in the production process, providing essential support to the production team and ensuring the success of the project. These NOS cover the following roles: Cashier, Accounts Assistant, Assistant Production Accountant, First Assistant Accountant, Production Accountant.
To ensure that the updated suite of standards captures what currently is considered best practice in the industry, we encourage industry professionals to contribute their views to these draft standards by giving feedback during the upcoming workshops in December 2025 and early January 2026.
