About
Hello, I'm Emma! I'm a Manchester based costumer and a 2023 graduate of the University of Salford, and I have an incredibly strong passion for the art of Costume. I pride myself on being a constant learner, and while I work well independently I work best when part of a team. I'm communicative, resourceful, quick thinking, positive and attentive, and my experience at University and on work placements has only fuelled my dedication, passion and excitement to find opportunities for work in my dream industry!

Costume Trainee
As a part of a Liverpool Film Office training scheme in August 2024, I was brought on board as a Costume Trainee for season 2 of 'G'wed' a young adult sitcom shot in Merseyside. As a trainee I was primarily based in the office, though I shadowed standbys on set and kept continuity for SAs. My responsibilities mainly consisted of pulling costumes for the lineup, laundry, repairs and alterations, processing returns/receipts and helping make costumes and props for upcoming episodes.

Costume and Set Design Trainee
In summer 2023 I was lucky enough to gain a paid traineeship with Close To Home, an independent theatre company owned and operated by an all-female team! CTH brought me on board their Design team to help run their production 'Identities' a heartwarming and hilarious play about breast cancer, and the experiences many women and girls face growing up. The show was incredibly personal to me, and with the support of the team I was able to learn so much about my practice as a costumer and how personal growth can nurture my professional self!

'The Cabin' is a short film made by 2nd Year UoS students-I was contacted about designing the film after friends on the course heard about my work on the 3 other shorts I was involved in at the time. 'The Cabin' is a contemporary slasher set in a secluded rural house, and my role gave me an excellent opportunity to begin a foray into horror, one of my favourite genres! I was able to work closely with actors, the makeup artist, director, writer and fight choreographer to achieve some of my proudest work so far. 'Urge' is a UoS final year short film that I was brought on board to design after connecting with the director and producer on another project we were involved in. The film, a dramatic and informative piece, follows a troubled young man as he falls down the dark rabbit hole of hardcore pornography addiction. The script dealt with some incredibly sensitive topics, and I used this as an opportunity to develop my on-set practice in a way that prioritised the safety, comfort and consent of the actors whilst still following the vision of the creative team. 'The Wildcat Speakeasy' was the first short film I ever designed for, and my first experience of working on a set! The film was a final year UoS production; a film noir set in the 1940s, it follows a grizzled detective as he struggles to reconcile his past demons when a mysterious new connection brings up old memories. I worked with our University's costume hire service to source authentic extant garments, and also had the opportunity to develop my skills in crowd costuming when styling around 20 extras for a scene set in the titular venue. 'Milkshakes and Burger Phones' is a short film set in 1986/1990, following three teenage girls as they navigate youth, romance and heartbreak. Slated for a 2024 release and hopeful festival run, the film was produced by final year UoS film students-I was brought on as Costume Designer last minute, so had to run the entire department myself! I had the best time on this film and made some really valuable connections. Images of the costumes, designs and moodboards can be found on my instagram @ebcostume!
