The ability to create and visualise 3D computer imagery in real-time has vast repercussions for the way filmmakers, VFX artists, animators, graphic artists, film directors and producers work. The possibilities offered by physical sets augmented with CGI will demand new skills of cinematographers, animators, artists, directors and commissioners alike.

That’s where Unreal Engine fits in (a game engine developed by Epic Games). The team at Escape Studios has created The Unreal Spring Collection; a suite of vital short training courses in Unreal Engine to ensure that skills in real-time production are spread across the UK, to help fuel the UK’s media industries.

What it covers

1st course: Introduction to Unreal Engine. Monday 24 and Tuesday 25 May and/or Wednesday and Thursday from 10 am - 4.30pm with a 45-minute break at 1pm. This is ideally for art department and post production personnel that assumes no knowledge of Unreal and is for people who want a grounding in Unreal that isn’t games-oriented, but allows them the opportunity to see how they may want to use Unreal as part of their work.

2nd course: Lighting in Unreal. Friday 28 May 2021 from 9.30 am - 5pm. We would expect people to have some basic understanding of Unreal (which could be picked up by taking the intro course in this Spring Collection). You will make impactful imagery by using Unreal’s lighting tools, and get the right look for your project by understanding different light types and how they illuminate your scene. Also find out the implications of lighting for real-time performance, saving rendering times.

3rd course: Virtual Cinematography and Movement in Unreal. Saturday 29 May 2021 from 9.30am - 5pm. The last course in the suite is Cinematography in Unreal. This course will be particularly useful for DOP’s, gaffers, camera department, lighting department, production designers, directors and producers. Apply real cinematography skills to bring your work to life in virtual 3D space. Animate cameras, lights and characters, using film making skills effectively in this new medium.
