  • Would you like to develop your skills and learn how to put together a departmental budget that can be backed up with credible and consistent assumptions?

The guiding principles of departmental budgeting course will enable participants to gain the necessary skills and knowledge to prepare their own departmental budgets. It will be taught by established and leading industry line producers and HODs and is aimed at ensuring that UK HETV and Film productions have access to a cohort of skilled and educated professionals who can bring increased value to the production chain.

This course will run ONLINE a number of times between October 2021 and February 2022. There are both weekend and weekday course options.

This programme is supported by the ScreenSkills High-end TV Skills Fund with contributions from UK high-end TV productions and by ScreenSkills as part of the BFI Future Film Skills programme using funds from the National Lottery.

Who it's for

This course is aimed at HODs, craft/technical coordinators and professionals with five or more years’ experience working in costume, locations, hair and make-up or art department for film or HETV productions.

What it covers

By the end of this training course participants will have learned:

  • how to use existing information to create and estimate budgets
  • how to use a simple spreadsheet to keep track of your budget and forecast actual costs
  • how to estimate materials costs
  • how to estimate labour costs
  • how to update your estimates as the production moves forward
  • how to communicate your budget and associated assumptions to line managers
  • had the benefit of a peer support network

Participants should leave with the knowledge and confidence to prepare their own department budgets.

Group 3 - 2 x 4 hour online sessions – afternoons 1400 – 1800 (you must be available to attend both sessions)

Group 4 - 2 x 4 hour online sessions – mornings 0900 – 1300 (you must be available to both sessions)

Group 5 - 4 x 2.5 hour online sessions – afternoons 1430 – 1700 (you must be available to attend all four sessions over the two weeks)
