An intensive course providing you with a grounding in the key principles and practices of the work involved in film production management.

Over 2 full days, and one evening session, delegates will learn how to break down a script which they will schedule and have a full understanding of all the elements which go into making up the budget as well as crucial management skills required of a production manager.

The course tutor is a senior line producer/ production exec with a wealth of experience of feature film and television drama productions.

This course is supported by ScreenSkills using National Lottery funds awarded by the BFI as part of the Future Film Skills programme.

Who it's for

This course is for junior production managers looking to grow their confidence and effectiveness, and production coordinators looking to make the transition to production manager with confidence.

What it covers

This course will be delivered in person and online, using zoom.

  • Monday 13 and Tuesday 14 December will be in London. 
  • Thursday 16 December there will be a Zoom session from 6 - 9 pm.

The course will cover the following:

  • Overview of Production Management – role, functions and responsibilities.
  • Setting up a project – what to think about and your relationship with the producer.
  • Introduction to effective scheduling - how to initially assess a project and break it down.
  • Principles of budgeting.
  • Controlling and tracking costs.
  • Health and Safety.
  • Risk Assessing.
  • Location Work, Stunts and SFX sequences.
  • Working with Directors and Execs – managing upwards & problem solving.
  • Working with cast.
  • Post-Production – from ingest to delivery, clearance and deliverables.
  • Legal Requirements and insurance.

In addition to the face-to-face training, there will be an additional online training in key elements of managing teams and softer skills involved in production manager work.

This includes identifying and tackling bullying and harassment, mental health issues on production, discrimination and effective recruitment and communication.
