Kitbashing skills
Professional kitbashing and prop construction skills
A practical, self paced online course taught by working prop makers at Pinewood Studios.
Kitbashing for film and TV focuses on one of the most widely used fabrication techniques in the industry: building convincing props by combining, adapting and reworking found components and mixed materials.
The course covers prop logic, parts selection, cutting and adapting components, structural joins, blending materials, and finishing techniques that make kitbashed props read convincingly on camera.
* This is not a model kit course and it is not about assembling pre-designed parts.
It is about learning how to think like a professional prop maker and build believable objects under real production constraints.
Early enrollment is now open at £150
Course access begins on 4 May 2026
Is this course for you?
This course is for people who want to understand how kitbashing is actually used in film and TV production environments. It is suited to aspiring and early career prop makers, model makers and designers looking to move into screen work, students and graduates building practical skills, and working creatives who need a flexible way to learn alongside other commitments.
If you are looking for a quick craft project, a cosplay build, or a materials included kit, this course is probably not the right fit.
What you will learn:
The focus of this course is on transferable techniques rather than one off projects.
You will learn how professional prop makers approach kitbashing, how to choose and modify parts so they feel believable within a world, and how to create props that hold up to filming and repeated use.
You will develop skills in selecting and adapting found components, cutting and reshaping plastics and mixed materials, structural joining methods, creating cohesive surface detail, and finishing techniques such as paint, blending and weathering.
Everything is taught with practical production realities in mind.
How the course works:
Kitbashing Skills is fully pre-recorded and self paced.
You can work through the modules in your own time and return to them whenever you need.
The course is made up of structured modules with practical demonstrations and clear explanations.
You can follow along step by step or watch first and apply the techniques later, just as you would on a job.
Alongside the videos, you will have access to The Forge, a private community forum where you can ask questions, share progress and get feedback from the Makinarium team.
Live Q&A sessions will also be scheduled from time to time.
There are no deadlines and no required live attendance.
One object used to teach multiple skills
Rather than focusing on a single hero prop, the course uses a handheld prop build as a way to explore kitbashing techniques.
This object is simply a vehicle for learning. Through it, you will practise parts selection, modification, structural joining, blending materials and finishing.
The emphasis is always on understanding why a technique is used and how it can be applied across different builds and productions.
You will gain the skills. What you build with them is up to you.
Materials and sourcing:
Materials are not supplied as part of the course.
Learning how to source, choose and adapt materials is a key professional skill, and one that is often overlooked.
A full materials list will be provided, along with guidance on suitable alternatives and budget friendly options.
This reflects how prop and costume makers work in real production environments.
Community and support:
When you enrol, you will be invited into a private course community within The Forge.
This is a space to share work in progress, ask questions, get feedback and learn from others going through the course.
The Makinarium team will be active in the forum, and live sessions will be added when appropriate.
Who is teaching the course?
The course is taught by working prop and costume makers based at Pinewood Studios, with experience across film and TV.
The techniques and workflows taught here are the same ones used on real jobs, under real time and budget constraints.
Early enrolment is available at an introductory price of £150
Course access begins on 4 May 2026
