HETV 2nd Assistant Director/ Extras Coordinator Training (Northern Ireland)
Are you based in Northern Ireland and recently stepped up to 2nd AD/ Extra Coordinator role? Or are you an experienced 3rd AD and Crowd Coordinator ready to step up to the role of 2nd AD/ Extra Coordinator in High-end TV? Then this programme is for you.
This immersive training course will take place in person in Belfast on 17 & 18 January 2025, allowing complete focus on the key areas of the role and an opportunity to connect with other ADs and share learning. In addition to this, the programme also includes:
3 x one-hour coaching session per participant offered after the course has completed.
3 online workshop sessions in key areas of:
- Communication
- Dealing with Conflict
- Working with Children and Young People
This programme is funded by the ScreenSkills High-end Television Skills Fund made up of contributions from high-end television productions made in the UK.
Who it's for
This training is aimed at recently stepped-up 2nd ADs/Extra Coordinators, looking to embed their skills and develop them further or experienced 3rd ADs and Crowd Coordinators keen to gain the skills to take a 2nd AD/ Extras Coordinator position.
Applicants must have at least three AD credits on HETV productions to be eligible to apply for this training.
This training is only open to individuals living and/or working in Northern Ireland.

What it covers
The in-person training will cover:
- Role and responsibilities of the 2nd AD from prep to production looking at relationships across the entire production
- Script breakdown – asking the essential questions and prioritising requirements
- Working with crew, cast and beyond – collaboration with other departments, working with Children and Young People, running the base team etc
- Paperwork – call sheets, shooting schedules and more
- Shoot week survival – coordination, what to expect day 1 and week 1
- Artiste Times, Travel and Transport - tips and tricks, working with transport captain, completing call sheets, timings, how and when, coordinating floor team, recording times accurately
- Crowd planning and world building – breaking down script for crowd scenes, working with creative leads to achieve a crowd breakdown from the shooting schedule
- Casting – working with agencies, street casting, local recruitment routes
- Budgeting and Rate Cards – creating crowd budget forecast from schedule and rates
- Running the crowd on set – communication, running the team, the crowd and base and production, maintaining morale, energy and timings
- Managing and reporting the money – managing crowd budgets, cost reporting requirements and best practice.
Online Workshop sessions (90 minute)
- Communication – how to work effectively with your team, departments and cast/crew. Setting effective communication
- Dealing with conflict - how to look after ourselves and each other. Managing with stress, coping with anxiety and dealing with uncertainty. How to have difficult conversations, effectively and confidently
- Working with children and young people - regulations, legal frameworks, responsibilities and reporting.
Coaching sessions:
3 x one-hour follow up session for each course participant as required, directed by participant to provide the input needed.
