Costume props techniques course
Professional fabrication skills for costume props in film and TV
A practical, self paced online course taught by working prop and costume makers at Pinewood Studios.
Costume props techniques focuses on the core fabrication skills used to create wearable props and costume accessories for film and TV.
The course covers construction techniques, joining and assembly methods, belts and pouches, mixing materials and textures, and weathering different materials for screen.
* This is not a kit based craft course and it is not about building a single finished costume piece.
It is about learning adaptable techniques you can apply across multiple builds, productions and roles.
Early enrollment is now open at £150
Course access begins on 4 May 2026
Is this course for you?
This course is for people who are serious about understanding how costume props and wearable items are made for film and TV.
It is suited to aspiring and early career prop and costume makers, students and graduates developing practical fabrication skills, theatre makers looking to move into film and TV, and working creatives who need a flexible way to learn alongside other commitments.
If you are looking for a quick craft project, a cosplay build, or a materials included kit, this course is probably not the right fit.
What you will learn:
The focus of this course is on transferable techniques rather than one off projects.
You will learn how professional makers approach wearable prop builds, how to select and combine materials for durability and performance, and how to create costume props that read well on camera and hold up in use.
You will develop skills in construction and joining methods, building belts and pouches, mixing materials and textures such as fabrics, plastics and metals, and weathering different materials so they sit convincingly within a costume world.
Everything is taught with practical production realities in mind.
How the course works:
Costume props techniques is fully pre-recorded and self paced.
You can work through the modules in your own time and return to them whenever you need.
The course is made up of structured modules with practical demonstrations and clear explanations.
You can follow along step by step or watch first and apply the techniques later, just as you would on a job.
Alongside the videos, you will have access to The Forge, a private community forum where you can ask questions, share progress and get feedback from the Makinarium team.
Live Q&A sessions will also be scheduled from time to time.
There are no deadlines and no required live attendance.
One set of items used to teach multiple skills
Rather than focusing on a single finished hero prop, the course uses a series of wearable costume prop elements such as constructed materials like chainmail, pouches and belts to explore different techniques.
These items are simply vehicles for learning. Through them, you will practise joining, construction, material mixing and weathering across different surfaces.
The emphasis is always on understanding why a technique is used and how it can be applied to other builds.
You will gain the skills. What you build with them is up to you.
Materials and sourcing:
Materials are not supplied as part of the course.
Learning how to source, choose and adapt materials is a key professional skill, and one that is often overlooked.
A full materials list will be provided, along with guidance on suitable alternatives and budget friendly options.
This reflects how prop and costume makers work in real production environments.
Community and support:
When you enrol, you will be invited into a private course community within The Forge.
This is a space to share work in progress, ask questions, get feedback and learn from others going through the course.
The Makinarium team will be active in the forum, and live sessions will be added when appropriate.
Who is teaching the course?
The course is taught by working prop and costume makers based at Pinewood Studios, with experience across film and TV.
The techniques and workflows taught here are the same ones used on real jobs, under real time and budget constraints.
Early enrolment is available at an introductory price of £150
Course access begins on 4 May 2026
