This course is part of the Connect & Inspire strand which offers a variety of sessions, from in-person networking and online roundtables to in-depth case studies, designed to promote the sharing of knowledge and the building of relationships across Unscripted.

One in five adults in the UK have some form of hearing loss. Yet how many people can say they fully understand the needs of a deaf person? To celebrate British Sign Language Week we are hosting a one-hour lunchtime introduction to BSL for those working in Unscripted TV in Glasgow. Full details of location and timings will be shared with successful applicants.

Who it's for

Anyone in unscripted TV in Glasgow.

The majority of our in person workshops offering is for those at early career stage and above. As a result, we generally require applicants to have at least 3 credits (unless working in a traditionally uncredited role or production studio role).

We are committed to ensuring all our courses are accessible to everyone. This course is designed to be as interactive as possible.

Please email heloisebeatontv@gmail.com if you have any access requirements.

Organiser:

Heloise Beaton is Project Lead of the TV Access Project, and freelance inclusion consultant. Every month she hosts an informal BSL club, for those in the TV industry who are learning BSL can get together and practice their signing. This has been made possible with support from Channel 4, who open their offices for these sessions.

Trainer:

Lorna McIntyre was born profoundly Deaf in Baillieston, Glasgow and runs Sign With Lorna.

Sign With Lorna isn’t a typical business — it’s a family-led, Deaf-led space rooted in lived experience and love for British Sign Language. Created by Lorna, a profoundly Deaf woman, and supported by her hearing family, SWL exists to break down communication barriers and build a more inclusive world.

What it covers

  • Deaf awareness (culture, communication tips, barriers)
  • Introduction to British Sign Language (BSL)
  • BSL alphabet
  • Basic everyday signs and phrases
