Laura Kaye Thomson

Artistic Director of Music Box Theatre

  • Location: London
  • Career stage: Early
  • Freelancer: Available

I am a writer, composer, performer and producer of theatre - particularly musical theatre - creating and developing original and ambitious new work in London and beyond.

I'm really passionate about the impact both music and theatre can have on us and how the two can work together to create moving, entertaining and though-provoking experiences. I want to push the boundaries of musical theatre and break down the stigma that sometimes goes with the genre.

I'm the artistic director (and at present also producer) of Music Box Theatre, a company dedicated to creating and developing new musical theatre. I am also co-producer of NEXT UK: a concert series that showcases the work of up and coming musical theatre writers. We have held concerts in London, Edinburgh and New York.

I am also a writer and wrote my first musical Poppies in 2015 (Book, music and lyrics). It is based on the true story of Lena Ashwell who brought theatre, music and poetry to the front lines of WW1. It is an actor-musician piece first performed at the Edinburgh Fringe and transferred to London in 2016 following some hefty re-writes and an extension into a two act musical. I was the youngest finalist in the Stiles and Drewe Best New Song Prize Award 2015 and had my work performed at the Garrick Theatre in the West End. I have had my work performed at The Other Palace (formerly the St James Theatre), Park Theatre, the Bunker Theatre, Theatre Royal Stratford East, Cockpit Theatre and The Space.

I wrote my first play Treasure in 2017 which is a one-woman piece about mothers, daughters, love, loss and mental health – all the good stuff. It was accepted into The Space theatre's One Festival and performed in January 2018.

I also compose scores for theatre. Most recently I composed the score for Burn Bright Theatre's 2018 production of Frankenstein in which the roles of Frankenstein and the Monster were gender-swapped. Check out my Soundcloud  for more.

I have directed (a little) starting with The Sound of Musicals: a cabaret filled with musical theatre favourites. I have also written, curated and directed personal performance pieces for corporate events - to celebrate an occasion or to give someone an extra speical send off. Contact me for more.
