About
I can only assume that everyone’s twenties are a miserable wasteland of envy, bitterness and struggle; interrupted with the occasional chuckle, flicker of hope and perhaps KFC bucket.
For the last few years, I’ve been working as an animator for other artists across the UK. I’ve just released 13 prints from a gallery in L.A and I teach part time at two Universities. So it’s not all miserable. But, let’s just say, this doesn’t pay the bills. The work available doesn’t pay that well and it’s often purely commercially driven. I’ve not made any personal work since I graduated in 2012 and I’m desperate to change that.
I’m from a town in North Kent called Sittingbourne. Industrial town, dead high-street, slight air of racism amongst relatives and locals. It is a depressing place. I’ve lived here forever, and although I want to leave this area for London loft apartments, it’s an important part of my identity. (Plus, I can’t afford the train to Victoria.)
The romance is certainly dead in Sittingbourne. However, I’m a romantic at heart and I’m searching for its fleeting glances in this grey wasteland. I believe animation is the tool that will help me find it.
Animation for adult audiences is unloved. Let's face it, it's largely used for advertising and kids tv. It's hardly the trendy art form of our age. I’d like to use the medium to make something human and special, about a place and time that feels lost and unloved. Something that is beyond trend. Beyond meta or postmodern, and instead simply about humans in this odd time of ours.
