Alex Rand is a Canadian-born, London-based Playwright and Theatre Maker.
His first play, "If The Lights Are Too Bright", about the Hong Kong democracy protests in 2014 was developed at the National Theatre Young Studio and Old Vic New Voices Lab, before being presented at the Ovalhouse as part of their 33% London Season in March 2015.
As part of the Soho Theatre Young Writer's Lab he has written and developed his second play "Glory Hotel", a German Expressionist play set in an all-male gay hostel in Berlin.
As a Producer Alex curated "Little Write Lies", a collection of nine short plays written and created in response to Yve Blake's "Lie Collector" at VAULTS 2015. He has Directed short plays for the National Theatre Studio, National Youth Theatre, Ovalhouse, and Theatre503.
In 2013 Alex spent the year working at the National Theatre Young Studio, where he collaborated with established artists such as playwrights Simon Stephens and Rachel De-lahay, choreographers Frauke Reqaurdt and Maxine Doyle, and participated in a residency with Punchdrunk. He collaborated on "The Shapre of Impossible", a new devised piece in the National Theare Shed in Summer 2013. Throughout this programme Alex also participated in the National Theatre's Producing course.
In a past life as an Actor Alex worked at the Southbank Centre, Tricycle Theatre, Arcola Theatre, Shoreditch Town Hall, Hampstead Theatre Downstairs, Theatre503, and played Ariel in "The Tempest" at the Minack Theatre in Cornwall.
Alex is interested in working and collaborating internationally. He currently holds a Canadian passport and an Indefinite Leave to Remain visa for the UK.
