John was born and raised in Dundee, Scotland. Initially he was interested in theatre and began training as an actor. He then studied at Scottish School of Contemporary Dance in Dundee and London Contemporary Dance School. John has worked with professional choreographers /companies such as Jorge Cresis, Freddie Opoku- Addiade, Akiko Kutimara, Ace Dance and Music, Two Thirds Sky, SmallPetitklien, C12 Dance Theatre, Opera North and Tom Dale. He has made works for Dance United, Shoreditch Youth Dance, The CAT Programmes, 2 Faced youth, Northern's Apprentices, BA's at The Place and collaborated on an award-winning new musical for the Old Vic Theatre for which he was also nominated for Best Choreographer category. In 2014 John won The Matthew Bourne Choreographer Award and also The BBC Fellowship Award for Swindon Dance. John Ross Dance, his own company, tours nationally and internationally
