Chris Roe is a composer based in London, working on a variety of projects and collaborating with some of the UK’s most exciting film/theatre directors and musicians. Spanning a range of genres, Chris’ music has been described as “brilliantly unnerving” and “highly energetic”, keeping a strong dramatic core whatever field he is working in.
Recent projects include the award-winning feature documentaries, Death of a Gentleman and Mission Control as well as independent short, Never Land and a collaboration with percussionist Joby Burgess, on a new piece for vibraphone and the rare ‘aluminium harp’. Chris is also composer in residence with Front Foot Theatre, whose recent production of Proof received a nomination for the Off West End Theatre Awards.
Listed as one of Sound and Music’s New Voices 2015 as part of the British Music Collection, Chris has been nominated for a British Composer Award 2015 for his orchestral work In Search of Strategy, broadcast on BBC Radio 3 earlier this year. In the film world, Chris’ score for the The Palace, reached the finals of the Peer Raben Award at Soundtrack Cologne, and he was a prize winner in the Oticons International Film Music Competition.
With his classical background, studying at Manchester University and the Royal College of Music, Chris has been able to work with incredibly talented musicians, and in 2013 he formed ANIMA; a project to bring together film and music in exciting live performances. The group has performed new filmmaker/composer collaborations at venues across London, most recently 42 feet underground in the Brunel Tunnel Shaft, as well as a live version of Chris’ score for The Palace.
