Artistic Director of Fragen Theatre Company, Roland specialises in theatre of the extreme, physical, political and relentless. Known to be “poetic”, “verbose”, he has been accused of “ambition, rawness, and a willingness for excess”.
Currently writer-director of acclaimed '5 Out of 10 Men' in co-production with theSpaceUK at Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2016.
Oberon Books recently published two of his plays, 'Blush of Dogs' & '5 Out of 10 Men', in one volume.
His critically acclaimed production Blush of Dogs at the Tabard theatre followed murder-mystery-cannabal-thriller-dream-play Planter’s Island.
Before training at Drama Centre, Roland wrote and directed two plays at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Stalemate (2008) and Man Pursued (2009). In 2010 he worked with Chicago’s Sideshow Theater Company as an assistant director, dramaturg and sometime performer. Following this and during his training, he worked widely in the London theatre, film and opera scenes as an assitant director and dramaturg but predominantly as a writer and director.
He has enjoyed a long-running collaborative relationship with Teatrul Béznă, a theatre company based in Bucharest. Together they run annual social theatre camps with children in the mountains of Romania; the most recent, in June-July of 2015, was based near Bran and asked the children to investigate the idea 'why we do harm'.
