About

Designer for Performance / Art Department / Scenic Artist

ScreenSkills Trainee, 2018

RSC Trainee Designer Finalist, 2018

Shortlisted for the Linbury Prize for Stage Design, 2017

My background in fine art is a huge influence on the physical manifestations of my designs and I take inspiration from a wide range of artistic genres. My designs are constant in their focus on light and colour, but while these core elements are consistent, my specific influences can vary from Turner to Rothko. I approach the design of any performance in a way that balances form, composition and colour in much the same way as a work of visual art.

Every design decision I make is underpinned by a strong and coherent concept. I believe that every visual decision should have purpose, strong foundation in the script and be part of a wider collaborative discussion. This rigorous approach allows me to create abstract designs which have a robust conceptual foundation.

The three years of intensive study at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama had a focus on developing a broad range of skills. It was required that I learn not only the artistic side of the design process but a competence in all stages from initial concepts and script analysis, through to drafting, scenic art and set construction.

On a practical side, I have a high level of skill in a variety of software, including Photoshop, SketchUp and AutoCAD, and have a great deal of experience actualising end products from these tools. I have specialised in scenic art and prop creation in the past, and so can be involved in any part of the design-creation process where I am required.
