Kirsty Sedgman

Lecturer in Theatre & Audience Research

  • Location: Bristol
  • Career stage: Experienced

Hello. I’m Kirsty Sedgman, a researcher and lecturer in audience engagement. Based in the Department of Theatre at the University of Bristol and currently supported by the British Academy, I write about cultural value and the role of the arts in our lives.

To put it simply, this means exploring what individuals and communities actually get out of participating in culture. From theatre to television, and from poetry to musicals, I evaluate how practitioners seek to engage their audiences, and how people find value in the things they do and see. My work is part of the contemporary drive to understand 'impact'. But instead of reducing audiences to simple statistics, my approach maps people’s engagements with culture in all their complexity.
