Early Career Dance Artist

  • Location: Manchester
  • Career stage: Entry
  • Freelancer: Available

Growing up in a tiny city in the East Midlands, I had big dreams and aspirations to perform on stage. I love performing arts. However, unless your family had a lot of money they could use to pay for dance classes, stage coach etc… Performing arts was fairly inaccessible. Since starting my degree in Dance, commencing in 2014 at the University of Salford, I grew evermore aware of the issues young people faced when attempting to enter into a career within the performance arts sector.

Living in Chicago for one semester and attending Columbia College Chicago really opened my eyes to the effects politics can have on the arts. This was the time I realised that I wanted to help young people into the dance industry and other parts of the performing arts sector, who would usually struggle. After I graduate in July, my aim is to gain an MA in Dance Politics and Sociology. I hope this will assist me in assisting others into an arts career.

I am currently working with four dancers on a project with the aim of encouraging people, specifically of the younger generation, to take an interest in politics. The Dance Theatre performance will have verbatum, masks, dance and comedy, to engage a non dance audience, and was premiered at the Shoots Scratch Night at the Lowry Theatre on 30th March 2017.
