About
Nemo; a fish with one fin; a young child estranged from his father; imprisoned in a new-found glass jail cell. For me, this fish represented a new world yet to be explored. But not the world of a dentist’s fish tank; a world of stories and cinema.
Since I can remember, I have always had this huge passion for telling stories. Using the toys that I possessed as a child, I would create characters and stories to tell. For me, that’s what filmmaking is about; twisting and shaping the reality you know to tell a new tale.
I was eight years old when my father bought our first DVD player. It came together with the movie “Finding Nemo”. This movie brought me into a daze and for weeks on-end I continued to re-watch it. Through this attraction I developed a huge intrigue into finding out just how the film came into being. So one early morning I went to work with my father; jumping at the chance to use his work-computer to find out more about this ocean-adventure.
I thoroughly researched it, learning about the drawings that went into it, the time, the people, and, what truly astounded me – the director. I felt a strong attraction to this position. Not just because of the leadership that comes from being in charge of a team, but through the actual realization that a person could spend his entire working life through storytelling and working with like-minded creatives.
I have always worried about my future, especially when I was a kid. But that special moment, in that cold afternoon, changed it completely. I was sure of what I wanted to do. I figured that was my purpose in life; my goal; everything I wanted to do; to become a film director.
Since then I haven’t stopped learning about cinema. Growing up in Portugal, where the world of filmmaking was difficult to come by, really accentuated my desire in wanting to experience first-hand what it was like.
