Deputy Director

  • Career stage: Expert

My background includes working as a Senior Graphic Design Consultant, mostly in the area of corporate communications and identity with transnational clients. In the early 90s I developed a range of innovative and influential creative sector degree programmes. These degrees were focussed on the integration of theory and practice in the context of community and commercial projects in close cooperation with industry. This led to becoming Head of a large Art, Design and Media Department at Croydon College. Here I introduced the annual Festival of Creativity, which took staff and student creative work out to the Croydon community in a series of week long exhibitions and shows.

More recently, I was a member of Skillset's Creative and Media Diploma Higher Eduation Advisory Group. At this time I was working for the University of Hertfordshire as Director of the Lifelong Learning Network for the East of England with responsibility for the Creative and Cultural Industries. This role included the development of a broad range of initiatives at regional and national level to promote progression into higher education though vocational routes in the Creative Industries sector.

My current responsibilities include leading the development and innovative use of Middlesex University’s Work Based Learning Framework and Accreditation Services to build sustainable partnerships with employers based on the recognition of their knowledge, skills and expertise. I also lead the University’s work in developing Professional and Degree Apprenticeships in collaboration with a range of national partners. This work includes being a member of the Governing Group for Creative Skilset's 'Exploring Higher Level Apprenticeships in Higher Education' project. The project has supported the development of Bachelors and Masters degrees that integrate the requirements of industry, work and academic learning to enable creative practitioners to gain degrees at an accelerated rate. The creative sub-sectors covered include: Outside Broadcasting; Journalism; Advertising; Public Relations; Web Design and Social Media; Games Design; and Visual Effects.

I have extensive experience of developing professional and work-based higher education provision in response to the needs of a variety of employment sectors in diverse higher education contexts. I also have extensive experience of leading partnership working with a wide range of universities, other education providers and businesses. I also have significant experience of higher education funding, quality assurance and enhancement practices and procedures as well as the development of creative approaches to learning, teaching and assessment.

I am a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I am a Trustee of SEEC academic credit consortium and a Board member of the Universities Vocational Awards Council (UVAC). I am also Chair of Middlesex University's Acreditation Board.

My research interests include the philosophy and sociology of education, higher education policy, fair access, widening participation, lifelong learning and vocational, professional and work-based employer-responsive higher education.

I seek to employ the knowledge, skills and experience I have gained to generate innovative responses to the changing landscape of higher education.

Specialties: The philosophy and sociology of education, higher education policy, fair access, widening participation and lifelong learning, vocational and employer-responsive curriculum development, work/practice-based learning, organisational development, credit, accreditation and recognition of higher-level learning, vocational and work/practice-based progression, higher education quality assurance practices, higher education funding, creative and cultural industries.
