Sam Williams

Writer, director, dramaturg

  • Location: London/Berlin
  • Career stage: Early
  • Freelancer: Available

I approach theatre as event, ritual and exchange: a charged moment in which anything can happen, a transformative collective gathering, and a site for discourse around new ways of living together. My work is collaborative and research-based. As a writer and director, I adapt eixsting texts and verbatim material as well as producing original work. Having collaborated with visual artists and activists while working as an art writer and journalist, I bring these approaches to theatre, deploying onstage logics of choreography, installation and curation. I have worked with photographers, performance artists, curators, visual artists, bondage artists, climate change activists, scientists, sex workers, journalists, and folk healers.

My work as an art writer and journalist, specializing in new aesthetic forms at the intersection of art and politics, has appeared for Frieze, the Guardian, BBC, Icon, Mute and others. I am also a visiting lecturer in criticism and dramaturgy at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.
