This is an opportunity for production companies only. Individual writers are not able to apply.

ScreenSkills are working with producer Marcus Wilson (Luther, The A-Word) to secure placements for five writers with drama production companies making returning drama. The writers will be awarded a bursary of £15,000 to write a speculative script for a single episode as part of a production company’s returning series. The new writers will benefit from the experience of working alongside the contracted series writers or potentially in a writer’s room if applicable.

The purpose of the programme is to provide an element of de-risk by funding the writing of an episode by a writer the company has not worked with previously. Our ambition is to provide more opportunities for up-and-coming writers to showcase their work and to establish positive relationships with drama companies to secure writing for drama commissions in the future.

How it works
Marcus Wilson will liaise with the production company to identify a writer the company has not worked with before. The new writer must:

  • Not have written on a high-end TV drama series previously
  • Not had experience in a writer’s room
  • Have no more than two production credits for single dramas
  • They can have previously worked on continuing drama, radio or theatre

Providing access to diverse crew and talent is key to our delivery objectives. The programme will ensure diverse writers are considered for these opportunities and will encourage production companies to be demonstrably proactive with their outreach to diverse applicants

There is no obligation for the production to use the script, but if they do, the new writer must receive a credit on the drama. The episode will be the property of the production company.

How to apply

Any production companies interested in taking part in this programme are invited to contact us by completing the 'Apply now' form, and we will be in touch.

Please note that this programme is open to applications from productions with returning series only, and cannot accept applications from standalone writers.
