Nearly 50 people working in the children’s TV sector participated in Get the Knowledge, a practical course on how to make great programmes for – and with – children.
The two-day workshop was delivered by Grand Media Scheme and supported by the ScreenSkills Children’s TV Skills Fund with contributions from UK children’s TV productions.
Get the Knowledge, delivered around the country between January and March 2019, shed a light on how to best approach working with children in a professional environment. Participants also received a range of tips on how to devise creative content for children.
“I found it very useful to find out more about the role of chaperones, our own duty of care to ourselves, our teams and the children and to hear more about how licensing works in the UK,” participant Jen Hainey said, after attending the course in Glasgow. “We were also given helpful reminders on how to best engage with neurodiverse children, young people and contributors.”
Bradford-based freelancer Nicole Joseph also found the course useful and said: “The course has inspired me and given me more confidence and motivation.”
The sessions were attended by professionals working across the UK, at different career stages. While some were highly experienced heads of production, others are just starting their freelance television careers.
Trainer Mark Robson, who presented the course alongside Alison Creswell, said it was “incredibly rewarding” delivering the course. “It takes us out across the country meeting positive and talented people working in, or with ambitions to work in, the children's television sector. We are very grateful to ScreenSkills for their creative support and investment.”
