Ben Glover on virtual production industry sessions

Ben Glover had been working in theatre and live events building good experience of using VFX but “wanted to explore opportunities in film and find out if my skills in VFX are transferable.” While looking at how he could use his existing knowledge and apply it to a new industry, he came across Industry Sessions by Talking Point: Virtual Production, supported by ScreenSkills.

He explained: “It was useful to listen to someone with experience and knowledge in post-production and virtual production. The session provided great ‘inside-track’ information – and it highlighted various roles and options. I heard about lots of examples of the type of work I could do, with my skillset.”

It was exactly the introduction Ben was looking for and after a helpful initial session he signed up to more sessions.

“Just joining the session was motivating, as it connected me with others. It accelerated my decision-making and my thinking about my own projects. The insight I got into the industry was in stark contrast to my assumptions – which was illuminating. This gave me a bit more clarity about possible next steps.”

Due to the restrictions at the time, the sessions were held remotely, leaving Ben hoping for a future, in-person connection. “Zoom cannot compete with meeting people IRL or visiting a set. It would have been good to have an opportunity to network informally in online breakout rooms. But I hope to be able to use the attendee group to network, anyway, which is a positive outcome I wasn't expecting.”

It wasn’t the only positive outcome of the sessions for Ben, who feels the experience has helped lead to new opportunities. “Since the session I have managed to work on set for a short film as well as create VFX and video projections on set for a dance film commissioned by the BBC due to launch in the next month or so. While these aren’t directly related to virtual production, these opportunities have helped developed my skills and experience in the area. I also hope to be directing a short film later in the year through the BFI network with a cast and crew already in place.”
