ScreenSkills-supported CPD opportunities
Whether you need help with funding the next step in your training, mentorship for your scriptwriting, or you are an experienced professional who needs that tiny push to step-up to the next level on the industry ladder, read on for a list of schemes and programmes to help develop your career. Some are run by ScreenSkills, others by third-party training bodies, with support from the High-end TV Skills Fund (also known as the high-end TV levy), Film Skills Fund, Television Skills Fund or Children's TV Skills Fund.
Career development for high-end TV
Skills Passport is a simple online tool designed to help TV professionals navigate the spectrum of short courses available to them. This is not an accreditation scheme, but rather identifies great short relevant courses and how they could benefit you and your career in the long run. Currently, Skills Passport is listing high-end TV courses, general screen skills for all and Production Safety Passport courses. ScreenSkills provides bursaries towards the cost of most accredited courses.
Make a Move
Make a Move is designed to support on-the-job training for people identified by productions as ready to move up into a more senior role with some support. Funding is available to subsidise the cost of employing and training individuals for higher grades, with the aim that at the end of the training the individual is already in, or is able to apply for, a job at the next grade up. Examples of potential 'moves up' could be a location assistant moving up to unit manager, make-up artist to make-up supervisor, or production secretary to production coordinator. The scheme covers all departments on a production.
Both High-end TV drama productions that pay into the High-end TV Skills Fund and children's live-action TV productions that pay the Children's TV Skills Fund can apply for funding. This can be used to support one or more people on the production to Make a Move. The funding is flexible and can be used to cover salaries, travel and accommodation expenses, mentoring or attendance at training courses. Individuals on Make a Move are not trainees, but part of a scheme to encourage and promote professional development.
Individuals can only participate in Make a Move after being put forward by their employer. The candidate can be a completely new person to the selected team and department or an individual that has already worked with the team. Find out more information and apply for Make a Move.
Leadership and management training for heads of departments
This is a rolling free leadership and management course for heads of departments on productions contributing to the High-end TV Skills Fund. Find out more and book a place for your HoDs.
